After your child’s treatment at University Pediatric Dentistry, our pediatric dentist and team will provide detailed instructions on post-treatment care. Please follow these instructions as closely as possible to ensure the best results of your child’s treatment. If you have questions about our post-treatment instructions or would like to make a follow-up appointment with Dr. M. Danielle Funny at our dental office in Charlotte, North Carolina, please call us today at 704-688-1664.

Local Anesthesia

After receiving local anesthesia, your child’s lip and/or cheek may be numb for up to two hours. Watch them carefully to make sure your child does not bite, chew or scratch his or her lip, cheeks or tongue.

Stainless Steel Crowns

Following the placement of a stainless steel crown, your child will need to avoid certain foods to prevent the crown from being pulled off. These foods include sticky food and candies (such as gummy bears, fruit snacks, taffy, Tootsie Rolls, caramels and chewing gum). You may provide your child with Children’s MOTRIN® or TYLENOL® to relieve discomfort and soreness.

Extractions

Following the extraction of a tooth, you should:

  • Have your child bite down on gauze at the extraction site for 15 minutes. Slight oozing is expected and may continue for several hours without need for alarm.
  • Feed your child soft foods.
  • Do not allow him or her to suck on straws or spit on the day of the extraction. Use Children’s MOTRIN or TYLENOL immediately after their appointment, and as directed, until bedtime.

Sealants or Fillings

Sealants and fillings are bonded to the biting surface of the tooth. Sticky foods and chewing on ice should be avoided, as they may dislodge the sealant or filling. Sticky foods include gummy bears, fruit snacks, taffy, Tootsie Rolls, caramels and chewing gum.

Space Maintainer or Other Appliances

Space maintainers and other appliances are cemented to your child’s teeth. However, sticky foods may cause bands to become dislodged or distorted. These foods include:

  • Gummy Bears
  • Fruit snacks
  • Taffy
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Chewing gum

We also recommend that your child avoids chewing on ice. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is a must to properly maintain both this appliance as well as your child’s oral health.

Your child may experience mild discomfort after the appliance is placed. Children’s MOTRIN or TYLENOL may be used to alleviate their soreness.
